Anthony Martial has been without a club since his contract at Manchester United expired on June 30th.
Flamengo looked at the forward, but his high salary request was a hindrance to closing the deal. The 28-year-old is now on the verge of joining a new club since leaving Manchester United.
That’s according to Greece’s Sport24, who say Martial is close to joining AEK Athens. He’s a free agent, which allows clubs to sign him outside the transfer window.
It’s claimed the operation is in the final stages and the Frenchman will sign a three-year deal at AEK.
Sport24 have found out the Greek club are giving a huge deal to the attacker. They say his salary will be €3m per year plus bonuses, taking it to €9m for three seasons. This makes it the ‘biggest contract ever given’ to a player in the club’s history.
AEK’s intention was to present him as their new player prior to their home game against Volos on Monday. That didn’t happen because the two parties still have to sort out the paperwork related to the deal.
Now it’s time for Martial to really kickstart his career after Manchester United.
