At the start of last year, there were several reports in Spain and France about Liverpool interest in signing Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé in the summer of 2021.
It was then explained Jürgen Klopp is a big fan of the 23-year-old and has maintained contact with both the player and his camp.
Liverpool didn’t make an attempt for the forward last summer, while Real Madrid failed to take him away from Parc des Princes in the same window.
Mbappé is out of contract in June. The Ligue 1 winners are making efforts to retain him, while Los Blancos are keen to acquire his services in the next window. Today’s edition of L’Equipe discusses this and then adds: ‘A third club (Liverpool?) would also have entered the dance.’
L’Equipe further detail why the Merseyside club could be in the picture for the former AS Monaco man. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino all have their deals at Anfield expiring in 2023.
The former two are in a ‘strong position’ when negotiating a new deal with Liverpool, with Mané also attracting interest from Barcelona. If one of them were to leave, then the PSG star could be an ultra-luxury replacement.
This isn’t the first time the French media have pushed Liverpool forward for Mbappé recently, although the costs of a deal seem prohibitive for the Reds.
