Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn would return to the Netherlands ‘on his knees’ if offered the chance this summer.

That’s the belief of journalist Valentijn Driessen, who feels the player has learned that a move abroad is not for everyone.

Bergwijn has been at Tottenham since 2020, when he joined from PSV Eindhoven in a £27m deal during the January transfer window.

He’s struggled to establish himself in London under successive managers, though, with Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and now Antonio Conte failing to get the best out of him.

That’s seen him regularly linked with a return to the Netherlands, with Ajax believed to be keen as they face the prospect of more stars leaving this summer.

And Driessen believes that is a move Bergwijn would jump at should he be given a chance to do so.

“He has now also seen that a foreign adventure is not everything,” FC Update report him saying.

”Even if you score a few goals, you have no certainty of playing. He also wants to be in the Dutch national team. I think he wants to go back to Amsterdam on his knees.”

Whether Ajax can get a deal over the line in the summer transfer window remains to be seen, however.

They were keen during the January transfer window this year and held extensive negotiations with Tottenham to try and make a transfer happen.

Despite their efforts, though, they were never able to push the deal over the line, largely because they didn’t want to match Spurs’ demands for their player.

That figure is likely to have dropped six months on, but journalist Mike Verweij believes an opportunity might have been missed.

“That was the moment to decide whether or not to do it,” he added.

“As his contract progresses, he becomes a little cheaper, but then there are also more bidders.

“And Bergwijn has, of course, already been in the starting blocks three, four times to come to Amsterdam. If it is a disappointment every time, you think at a certain point, ‘forget it’.”
