With Paris Saint-Germain’s most recent exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino’s head is about to roll.
Not literally, but the Argentine is expected to see his time at the French club cut short, whether it be soon or at the end of the season, meaning they will, once again, need a new manager.
Over the weekend, L’Equipe drew a list of 10 names that the club could choose from, among which can be found Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, although none of these are concrete options, just suggestions from the newspaper.
The Spaniard is currently enjoying a very positive spell at the helm of the Gunners, who most recently beat Leicester City 2-0 in the Premier League and find themselves fourth in the table with a healthy number of games in hand on those around them.
This has put Arteta in a new light in the eyes of many, as his process with the Arsenal is starting to produce the results many wanted from him when he was appointed as Unai Emery’s successor at the Emirates.
Having played for the Gunners beforehand, he knew the club, and that’s what Paris Saint-Germain could bank on too, according to the newspaper.
They state the former midfielder, who played 53 games for the French club between 2000 and 2002, has seen his ‘reputation grow among young managers’.
That’s because of the ‘good work done at Arsenal’, which ‘doesn’t leave many teams indifferent’.
They then suggest ‘the time may have come for the former Spanish midfielder to take the reins of a new team one year from the end of his contract’, but it’s made clear ‘everything will also depend on Arteta’s desire at a time when the Gunners are on their way to take part in the Champions League for the first time since 2017’.
Considering the way Arsenal are playing and how happy their manager currently seems at the helm, this seems highly unlikely, but crazier things have happened in football.
