Tyrell Malacia ‘can’t possibly ignore’ an offer from Manchester United, even if a switch to Lyon may have made more sense.
That’s according to Voetbal International journalist Süleyman Öztürk, who believes the defender simply couldn’t turn down the possibility of a switch to Old Trafford.
Malacia had appeared set for a move to Lyon this summer following an impressive season at Feyenoord, with the French side reaching an agreement to make the move happen.
However, Manchester United pushed themselves into the picture last week, quickly formalising a deal with Feyenoord and Malacia to take him to Old Trafford instead.
That deal is now close to being completed, with the defender set to become Erik ten Hag’s first signing of this summer’s planned rebuild.
The move is still expected to go through despite it being stalled by problems with the player’s agent, and Ozturk believes the offer from Manchester United is one Malacia simply couldn’t say no to.
“You would say that Lyon is a better intermediate step because then you get to play at a less high level,” he told Voetbal International.
“But if then suddenly Manchester United comes knocking on your door, then you can’t possibly ignore that, I think. Because what player would say no to United? No, I’m going to Lyon.
“You do go from the Conference League to the Premier League, so to speak. It’s quite a switch, you know. I think some people underestimate that.
“You can be a great talent, knock on the door of the Dutch national team and have had a good year at Feyenoord. The competition in the Premier League is much greater than in the Eredivisie.”
