Earlier on Friday, we looked at contrasting reports in the Italian media regarding Napoli’s wishes when it comes to Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian’s contract at Tottenham is expiring in the next few months, and with no apparent desire from either club or player to renew at this moment in time, an exit is being mooted.
Various landing spots have been rumoured, and a move to Italy, where veteran defenders often thrive, certainly makes sense, especially since he’s also never played there before.
Napoli have been one of the clubs supposedly keen on his services, mostly due to the fact there is an expectation that Kalidou Koulibaly could be sold to the highest bidder, leaving Gennaro Gattuso with a hole needing filled in his backline.
He said: “Regarding news, Tottenham’s Belgian defender, Vertonghen, is out of contract, and as far as I know, an eventual transfer to Naples would be to his liking. The player is also of interest to Inter”.
It’s hard to know what to believe these days, but as we stated above, it would make sense for the Spurs man to be intrigued by the prospect of playing in Italy before hanging his boots up or returning to Belgium for his final years on the pitch.
Whether that happens, however, is entirely up to him, and interested clubs, of course.
