Towards the end of the transfer window, when it was clear that Manchester United were not going to make a move for Cody Gakpo, Leeds United and Southampton showed up.

The Whites and the Saints had already been mentioned in the past, but with the PSV star looking for a move abroad, there was hope a deal could be struck.

However, due to how late in the transfer window it was, neither Leeds nor Southampton were able to sign the Dutchman, who has remained in the Netherlands for the time being, where he continues to play well in hope of making the World Cup.

For former footballer Rene van de Kerkhof, the player should be in Louis van Gaal’s squad regardless of what happens, and predicts big things for the winger.

He told Voetbal International, relayed by PSV Fans: “No joke, I think he will be the revelation of the World Cup. He can play football so well, he always plays well against top team. I can see him excelling at the World Cup and becoming the surprise of the tournament.

“Of course, that will allow him to leave PSV during the winter break, but I think he will just finish the season and take PSV to the title. Leeds, Southampton… I have no contempt for these clubs, but Gakpo can do better. I don’t think England is right for him. Spain or Italy is more obvious.”

Leeds and Southampton probably disagree with Van de Kerkhof, since they felt the forward would have been the right fit for their clubs, as did Erik ten Hag at Manchester United for a while.

Either way, if Jesse Marsch or Ralph Hasenhüttl want the player in January, they will be paying very close attention to how he does at the World Cup, because a great tournament could see his value sky rocket and make a transfer far more difficult.
