Feyenoord may be regretting their decision to sell Mats Wieffer to Brighton and Hove Albion this summer, as they could’ve developed something special with the players who’ve replaced him.
That’s according to Hans Kraay Junior, via Soccer News, who believes there may be some regret at Feyenoord over the deal they agreed.
Wieffer joined Brighton in a €32m deal at the beginning of July as part of the Seagull’s major spend to strengthen their squad this summer.
The move brought an end to a two-year stay at Feyenoord for the 24-year-old, who has arrived at the club in a €575,000 deal in July 2022.
He went on to establish himself as a key player at the club in the following two years, making 79 appearances in total and earning admirers across Europe before his eventual move to Brighton.
Feyenoord haven’t had a good start to the season without him, currently sitting sixth in the Eredivisie after seven games and 11 points behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven.
There have been encouraging performances from the current midfield set up, though, and Kraay Jnr believes they may regret not having Wieffer at the club to link up with them.
“Wieffer has only played three or four games for Brighton,” he said.
“And started two, because he was injured. But it seems like he always has space. And if he doesn’t have space, he plays back. And if he does have some space, he opens up. He does that very quickly.
“If Feyenoord is watching now, they think: Damn, if we had had that with Hwang, with Stengs in front… Then they would have had a nice midfield.”
