Arsenal may want to step up any potential interest in Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret as he and Napoli close in on a renewed contract.
Calciomercato cover the goalkeeper today and how both he and Napoli are ‘moving forward together’ towards a new, extended contract.
Reports over the last week have claimed that Arsenal were looking at Meret as they continue to look for a long-term alternative to David Raya.
They currently have Neto occupying the number two spot after signing him on loan from Bournemouth following Aaron Ramsdale’s move to Southampton.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be a fan of Meret, and it was suggested that the Gunners could move in the near future.
They will wat to do so sooner rather than later, though, as Calciomercato report that negotiations over an extension to his contract have entered the final stretch.
The goalkeeper’s current deal is due to expire in July next year, but the two parties have now reached an agreement on the economic terms of a new agreement. Now only the duration of the contract needs to be worked out.
Meret would like a three-year deal while Napoli favour two years with the option of a third. That small obstacle is expected to be overcome in their next meeting and a there is great confidence that an agreement will be struck.
That will come as bad news to Arsenal, who it seems will miss out on a potential option before he even really became available.
