Beep-beep-beep, that’s the sound of Italian reversing when it comes to Toby Alderweireld.
For weeks there’s been claims that the only thing holding up a potential transfer to AS Roma is Tottenham and their refusal to come down from €28m.
The defender himself, he’s been totally fine according to the majority of Italian reports, with there even being claims of personal terms already being agreed on a deal with Roma.
Franco Baldini has reportedly been flying around Europe trying to use his charm to get Spurs down on their price, which has, of course, been completely fruitless.
Monday’s Gazzetta dello Sport reports there’s now a ‘brake’ on the deal, before they go into reverse and concede Alderweireld may not be up for it.
The defender is quoted as saying, after Tottenham’s victory over Juventus: “My future? I just want to say that I’m totally focused on Tottenham. In football everything happens very quickly, but I can reiterate that I am thinking only of working to be ready to face the new season in the best possible way.”
This isn’t the first time the footballer has said similar this summer, and it’s now looking increasingly possible he could continue at Spurs beyond the current window.
Roma are looking at other options.
