On Wednesday, Bayern Munich suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa at Villa Park. It was Vincent Kompany’s first loss since joining the German club from Burnley in the summer.
The 38-year-old spent two years at Burnley, guiding them to secure a promotion to the topflight in his first season at Turf Moor. He wasn’t able to help the Clarets stay in the Premier League last season.
Prior to his spell at Burnley, Kompany managed Anderlecht’s first team for two years. This was his combined coaching experience before taking up the job at the Allianz Arena.
There were question marks over the Bundesliga side’s decision to appoint him as Thomas Tuchel’s successor.
Bayern have enjoyed an impressive start under the former Burnley manager this season. They have scored 17 goals and conceded four from five league games and are leading the table.
After yesterday’s loss, Bayern CEO Jan Christian Dreesen gave a speech, relayed by Bild, at The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Birmingham.
“Vincent, we are sure that with your way of playing, your speech, your interaction with the players, you are not only causing us a bit of grief today but have also given us a lot of joy in the last few games,” he said.
“It will bring us joy again. We’re glad you’re with us. The way we are playing football again makes us very happy. We feel that the team is having fun!”
Bayern had more possession and shots on target against Aston Villa but failed to find the back of the net.
Kompany’s attacking style of football means they take risks at the back. This has paid off in most of the games, but not against Unai Emery’s side.
The Belgian employed the same style at Burnley and Bild now claim the Bayern leaders will continue to back him to use it at the Allianz Arena.
