Ousmane Dembele’s severe hamstring injury is a huge blow to the player.
His time at Barcelona since moving from Borussia Dortmund has been difficult, with fitness issues making everything more problematic.
This time, the hamstring tear is so bad it could leave him out for the rest of the season, and that could see the Catalan club sign a replacement.
Under certain conditions, La Liga clubs are allowed to sign a player out of the window, if a current squad member suffers a long term injury.
Tuesday afternoon saw various claims come from the Catalan media regarding Barcelona’s intentions, and now Cadena Ser’s El Larguero radio show has announced the club will sign a player if the regulations allow them to.
A meeting has been held today, following the Dembele news, and the decision has been made.
It’s crucial that Dembele’s medical report, which isn’t finalised, confirms he’s out for at least five months, otherwise those in charge of the Spanish football regulations won’t allow a signing.
Should Dembele and those managing his recovery opt for surgery, then it would cover that period.
On top of that, any signing has to come from within the Spanish federation, so only players already in the country can be considered.
El Larguero report Barcelona know the man they want… but they don’t name him.
The player doesn’t have to be out of contract.
