Manchester City face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, after knocking out Manchester United in the previous round.
Diego Simeone’s side didn’t get the team they wanted in this round and will go into the match knowing Pep Guardiola’s side are favourites to make it through this stage.
Atletico, the current Spanish champions, will now have to cope without Jose Gimenez, report Marca, as the defender failed a late fitness test to make the travelling squad.
The 27-year-old was injured against Alaves, and has been suffering from ‘some discomfort, although the exact nature of the injury issue isn’t shared.
Gimenez underwent a series of medical tests on Sunday morning, in the hope that he’d be available to face Manchester City. However, those test didn’t go the way the player or Atletico wanted, and subsequently the Uruguay international hasn’t even been able to take the flight to England.
Losing Gimenez will be a blow for Simeone, with the defender being a crucial part of Simeone’s tough Atletico side.
