So, here we are at the end of the season. Carles Gil is contracted to return to Aston Villa, and the situation is in one of only two conclusions it could have reached.
One of the options would have been for Gil to have a nightmare at Deportivo La Coruna, and for the Spanish club to send him back to Aston Villa thankful they didn’t have to have him in the squad any longer.
The second realistic conclusion was that Gil would do reasonably well, and Depor would want to keep him. All along, that scenario was always going to find a barrier in price.
Depor can’t, or won’t, pay a decent fee to Aston Villa for Gil. And by decent we mean less than €5m, but perhaps more than €1.5m.
La Voz de Galicia report that Gil is ‘appetising’ for Deportivo La Coruna, but there are ‘many’ clubs willing to pay a transfer fee to Aston Villa. This means Villa wouldn’t need to collapse on price, and would be unlikely to agree to another loan, which would surely be Depor’s preference.
It’s still early in the summer, and if none of these ‘many’ clubs come forward then maybe Depor’s hopes of persuading Aston Villa will increase.
