Aston Villa agreed a deal with Caen for Frédéric Guilbert in January 2019 and allowed him to finish the 2018/19 season on loan with the French club.
The right-back made 25 league appearances in his debut season in England, including 22 starts, and managed to register two assists in the process.
Despite featuring regularly in the league and EFL Cup, the 25-year-old’s future could be away from Villa Park.
That’s according to France Football, who state the defender ‘could already leave the club’ this summer because Dean Smith’s side are pushing the Frenchman ‘towards the exit’.
It’s claimed the Premier League club have set their sights on signing Nottingham Forest’s Matty Cash, and want to offload Guilbert to free space in the right-back position.
The French magazine states several clubs in the Premier League and Championship are attentive to the fullback’s situation at Villa. A return to France could also be on the cards in the ongoing window.
Guilbert has three more years left on his contract at Villa, and with the club wanting to cut ties with him, they may be looking to recover the €3.5m (excluding bonuses) invested in signing the defender from Caen.
