It’s fair to say Borja Baston’s move to Aston Villa hasn’t gone according to plan.
A gamble of a signing, and quite possibly related to him having the same agent as Pepe Reina, the striker arrived from Swansea City on a free transfer.
Had it gone well, and he’d helped Villa stay up, then his contract may well have been extended beyond the summer. Instead, he got seven minutes in a loss to Tottenham, nine minutes in a loss to Southampton and then dropped out of the squad.
Covid-19 then brought an end, or a delay, to the current Premier League season, and that could be that. Even if football restarts there’s the possibility Aston Villa won’t be fighting to extend Borja’s stay to cover those matches.
So he’ll need to find a new home, and a return to Real Zaragoza, where he played successfully on loan from Atletico Madrid, is on the cards.
Marca report that Zaragoza want Borja, and that he’s picked them out as his ‘priority’ club to sign for. The problem, as ever, is money.
Borja will again be free, but salary demands will be key. As long as Zaragoza match the best offer, then he’ll choose them.
