Carles Gil arrived at Aston Villa with great hopes attached to him. The young Spaniard had been highly rated at Valencia, and his sudden switch to Villa came as a shock.
Gil was hyped as being Aston Villa’s very own Spanish magician and whilst he showed glimpses of his undoubted talent he wasn’t able to get all the ingredients together on a regular enough basis.
Aston Villa’s issues since Gil signed for the club obviously didn’t help but it was no surprise when he was allowed to return to Spain, and it would also be little surprise if he doesn’t ever actually return, despite it being a loan.
Aside from a little winter purple patch, Gil’s time on loan at Deportivo La Coruna has been similar to his Aston Villa days. Plenty of promise, but finding it hard to make that pay off, and not completely convincing the manager.
Depor welcome Barcelona on Sunday and Gil has been speaking to the media ahead of the match. The 24 year old said he’s ‘very happy’ to be playing matches but conceded he’s still ‘got a lot to learn’.
On his current situation, the Aston Villa loan player is quoted by La Opinion Coruna as saying: “There’s a lot of competition and I’m happy with the minutes I have.”
Depor are in a good position to avoid relegation and should they achieve that aim, and Gil help them, then a longer stay could be on the cards.
