About to face his former club Nantes with Saint-Etienne on Wednesday evening, Jordan Veretout is the centre of attention of the French media at the moment.
The Aston Villa midfielder, currently on loan back in France while the Midlands club attempts to regain promotion after being relegated from the Premier League last season, already told But! he wasn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of returning to Stade de La Beaujoire, but in an interview with 20 Minutes, he comes back on the reasons for his loan.
Asked by the newspaper if it would have been impossible for him to stay in England this season, the player gave a lengthy answer that could be easily summarised as ‘yes’.
He said: “I lived through relegation, an awful season, and I didn’t want to play in the Championship. It’s a very complicated league for me, because it doesn’t suit my style of play. There were clubs in England who wanted me, but I didn’t want to relive a season like last year.
“We all know that between the 10th and the 20th spot in England, anyone can go down. That’s why I preferred to return to France.”
This might just be us, but we’re not sure painting all the clubs in the second half of the table with the same brush is a good idea if Veretout wants to return to England in the near future.
The player hasn’t exactly set the world alight since his return to France, and while there’s still time for him to do so, he should probably remember he still has four years left on his Aston Villa contract.
