Back during the January transfer window, Everton spent the last few days scurrying around trying to find a striker to gift to Frank Lampard.

They eventually failed in that quest, and the manager was then sacked, replaced by Sean Dyche who was given the task of keeping the Toffees up.

One of the players Everton were trying to sign at the time was Moussa Dembélé, currently at Lyon, whom Olympique et Lyonnais also state of interest to Aston Villa.

The forward knows British football well from his time at Fulham and Celtic, and a return to these shores wouldn’t be that much for him to handle.

His contract expires at the end of the campaign, and with no renewal in sight, Olympique et Lyonnais make it clear he ‘will no longer be Lyonnais (part of the club) in two months time’.

That’s when they recall that Aston Villa and Everton ‘came for information’ over the winter, while Galatasaray ‘wouldn’t be against attracting him’ either.

Despite all the success Unai Emery has managed to bring to Villa Park of late, there has been a feeling that a new striker could go a long way.

Now, whether Dembélé is that man for Aston Villa remains to be seen, but bringing a player of his experience for free in the summer for free could allow the club to spend their transfer budget elsewhere.

As for Everton, this conversation needs to be had in a few more weeks, all depending on whether they manage to stay up in the Premier League or not.
