Iago Aspas has revealed he wanted to leave Liverpool early into his time at the club after realising he wouldn’t be a regular in the side.

Aspas joined Liverpool in a €9.72m deal from Celta Vigo in July 2013 as new manager Brendan Rodgers looked to add extra firepower to his side.

There was plenty of excitement about the move at the time, with Aspas having established himself as a rising star during his time with Celta.

His move to Anfield proved to be a disastrous one, though, as he managed just 15 appearances and less than 500 minutes of football at Anfield.

He eventually left just a year later on loan to Sevilla before completing a permanent move away from Liverpool in 2015.

His time at the club is not fondly remembered by many, with the overriding memory being of the poorly taken corner that sealed defeat to Chelsea, a loss that effectively cost Liverpool the title this year.

From the outside, it appeared the move was a bad one for all parties, and Aspas admits he was keen to leave early on.

“I am a kid who likes football a lot,” he told La Voz de Galicia.

“I went to Liverpool, I didn’t play, and I already wanted to leave.

“They told me to hold on, that colleagues were going to leave, and there could be opportunities.

“But I like to play, and if it can’t be on one side, it will be on another.”

Leaving certainly proved to be the smart choice for Aspas, who has since returned to Celta and made himself an icon at the club.

He currently has 147 goals for the club in 334 appearances, a tally that makes him the record goalscorer for the Spanish side and adored by all.

That was never likely at Anfield, and it goes to show that his instinct of wanting to leave early on, was probably the right one.
