Last week, claims from the Spanish press stated Arsenal have made a first offer to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer.

Three days ago, Mundo Deportivo dismissed that, but insisted that Arsenal are determined to go all in for the midfielder.

At the weekend, the same newspaper said the 28-year-old seems to have opted for the Gunners amid interest from Barcelona.

Merino was part of the Spain squad that won the Euro 2024 last month, and is scheduled to return to the La Liga side for pre-season training today.

Noticias de Gipuzkoa claim the midfielder’s transfer to Arsenal has been taken for granted, but the ‘only certainty’ is that he will return to the club, unless the Spanish club give him permission not to train from today.

The former Newcastle United man has less than a year left on his deal and this window will be La Real’s last big chance to earn from his sale. Merino, who is ‘waiting for Arsenal’, will have to resolve his future at Real Sociedad in the ‘coming days’.

It’s claimed Mikel Arteta’s side, for their part, ‘will charge’ for Merino, meaning they will make an approach to sign him. Unless and until that happens, the player has to train with Real Sociedad.
