With Newcastle United seemingly winning the race for Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimarães, it would be fair to say they’ve got there ahead of competition, specifically from Arsenal.
The Brazilian has been linked to a few clubs for a while, including from the Premier League, where the Gunners have been repeatedly named as one of the contenders for his move.
Now as Goal Brasil reports the Magpies’ deal for the 24-year-old, they point out that Arsenal have indeed been in touch to sign him.
They claim that Arsenal have ‘been in talks’ with Guimarães’ staff and Lyon since the last transfer window. The problem is that the London side either don’t have the money to pay the French, or won’t part with that much right now.
Newcastle are believed to be closing the deal for Guimarães for €40m, all paid at once. It’s said that the Ligue 1 side, who did not qualify for the Champions League, were in need of making money and the Brazilian was one of the ‘most wanted players in the market’.
The midfielder is currently in Ecuador with the Brazilian national team and is expected to have a medical in his home country in the coming days.
