It appears that even when a club comes knocking quite concretely for Mesut Özil, Arsenal can’t get rid of him.
Why? Because the Germany international doesn’t want to move to Turkey, rejecting an offer from Fenerbahçe.
That’s according to Bild, who claim the Arsenal playmaker ‘had an offer’ from the Süper Lig club, but Özil decided to push the offer way because ‘they cannot handle’ the player’s wages.
Earning just under €25m/season, the former Real Madrid star is starting to become a great inconvenience for Mikel Arteta and the Gunners in general, meaning an exit would probably be preferable.
However, with the player clearly intent on keeping hold of his wages rather than finding first-team football elsewhere, there’s not a lot they can do.
Bild also say Özil is hoping for a ‘sporty comeback’, although that entirely depends on Arteta and his plans going forward.
The 31-year-old hasn’t featured once since the Premier League’s restart, sitting on the bench for both games against Brighton and Southampton before missing out on the remaining squads so far with ‘back trouble’.
