Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s performances this season have ‘reactivated’ the debate over who should be Spain number one.
That’s according to Levante EMV, who say the Arsenal star is ‘complicating’ life for Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who has so far preferred Unai Simón.
They explain that the debate about who should be Spain’s number one has been reactivated after it seemed closed as Raya’s performances for Arsenal have been ‘very strong’ and Simón shows signs of irregularity.
His biggest handicap is his ability with the ball at this feet, something he doesn’t particularly require at club level but is a necessity for Spain.
He’s made several mistakes on that front, including in the recent clash with Brazil, and that’s opened up the debate about Raya once again.
He is ‘knocking down the door’ in England, where he’s established himself as number one for Arsenal and has only conceded 23 goals in 29 games this season.
There is no doubt about his footwork, which is ‘impeccable’, while his agility also allows him to ‘stop impossible balls’. In other words, there is a feeling he is more of a complete package than Simón.
De la Fuente has continued to defend his choice despite his mistakes, but the reality is that Raya’s performances for Arsenal are ‘complicating’ the situation for the Spain boss ahead of Euro 2024.
