Sent to Marseille on loan for the season, William Saliba is expected to return to Arsenal when the current campaign comes to an end.
The idea was for him to get the minutes he wouldn’t be given by Mikel Arteta at the Emirates this season, and that’s exactly what’s happened, as Jorge Sampaoli has made him a key player in the south of France.
Already expected to lose Boubacar Kamara at the end of the season, the Ligue 1 side will also have to plan their future without the 20-year-old, with But! Football Club relaying new information on Thursday evening.
Through a video on their website, they explain it’s ‘delicate’ to see him continue at Marseille beyond this season, especially because despite Arteta not trusting Saliba in the past, ‘this should be different next season’.
In fact, ‘a contract renewal is currently being studied’, as his current deal with the Gunners expires in 2024, and his good form on loan could see him be ‘rewarded with a new long-term contract and a wage increase’.
‘Talks with his entourage’ are already underway to that effect, and only should those fail would we see Arsenal consider a parting of ways, with clubs such as Milan and Inter monitoring the young defender’s situation.
