Having already signed Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria to bolster their midfield defensively, Arsenal are now seeking out another defensive midfielder for the upcoming season, according to France Football.
The man in question is World Cup champion Steven Nzonzi, currently contracted to Sevilla with a €40m release clause in his deal.
However, the French magazine state the Gunners believe that amount is too high, and are currently in the process of holding talks with the La Liga side to try and lower the price.
Not wanting to spend such a large sum on a player edging closer to his thirties, Arsenal are attempting to both please their new manager while ensuring they don’t overspend in the process.
Unai Emery sees his former Sevilla pupil as the ideal man to ‘spearhead’ his midfield, most likely wanting to ease the pressure on Torreira, while ensuring he has options for the forthcoming season.
Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka have hardly impressed as out and out defensive midfielders, and having two great options for the role would certainly fill a much needed gap in the Arsenal squad.
However, will Sevilla agree to a lower fee after their player’s successful World Cup campaign?
