Andre Onana is one of the players who will go down in Arsenal transfer folklore as having been linked with the club for years, but never actually making the move.
The goalkeeper recently returned from a lengthy ban after violating doping regulations, yet it looks unlikely that he’ll extend his contract with Ajax.
With a deal expiring at the end of the season, talks over a renewal fell to pieces a while ago, and the relationship between the parties involved isn’t the best. For months it’s been assumed in Italy that Onana is set to sign for Inter Milan when his contract in the Netherlands expires.
Gazzetta dello Sport take a look at the situation in their Sunday edition, and explain that after things went a little quiet between the parties, Onana has ‘renewed his promise of love’ with Inter.
That’s despite ‘last-minute attempts’ of clubs from both the Premier League and Serie A, with Arsenal the only ones named.
Of course, the Gunners don’t need a senior goalkeeper right now, with Aaron Ramsdale quickly working his way into the hearts of the club’s fans. There’s a possibility Onana has been considered as a replacement for Bernd Leno, yet the option of Inter, and a likelier starting place, will have been more tempting.
Alternatively, this could just be hype from Gazzetta to make it look like Inter Milan have won a fiercely contested race for the soon-to-be free agent.
As part of the Italian newspaper’s look at Inter’s ‘low cost’ plans, Alexandre Lacazette gets a mention, with the Frenchman considered an option for the summer window, although nothing more at this stage.
