With Petr Cech retiring and returning to Chelsea this summer, Arsenal have something of a goalkeeping shortage on their hands.
While the number one jersey belongs to Bernd Leno, it remains to be seen who plays back up to the German next season.
Emiliano Martinez and Dejan Iliev are options and named in the squad, but if the Gunners don’t fancy either of them then a new signing will have to arrive to fill the spot.
That’s where Josep Martínez may come into the mix, with Marca reporting today that the Gunners are keen on the Las Palmas goalkeeper.
According to the newspaper, Real Madrid have already registered an interest in the 21-year-old and now Real Betis and Arsenal are doing the same.
However, Martínez will not be an easy signing for any of the three to make. For a start, Las Palmas don’t want to sit down and negotiate a deal with anyone. They know Martinez is one of their most talented prospects so naturally don’t want to lose him.
Martínez has a €10m release clause in his contract, so any interested party would likely have to pay that.
Whether Arsenal would is debatable. They don’t exactly have the cash to spare this summer and €10m is a lot for a player whose highest level of football so far has been La Liga 2.
The Gunners are far more likely to look at the options they already have than do that, or at least target someone with a far lower asking price.
