Arsenal are ahead of Real Madrid in the race to sign Lille forward Jonathan David in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Madrid focused Defensa Central, who say the Gunners are leading the race to sign ‘one of the revelations’ of Ligue 1.

David has been in impressive form for Lille this season, with 16 goals and two assists to his name in all competitions and a growing list of admirers in Europe as a result.

Arsenal are believed to be one of them, with Mikel Arteta’s side likely to be on the hunt for a striker to replace Pierre Emerick Aubameyang following his move to Barcelona in January.

Defensa Central pick up on that today, stating that ‘everything suggests’ that David will be leaving the Ligue 1 side this summer.

They are already ‘starting to place him’ in possible destinations, and Madrid would appeal, but they are currently being trumped by Arsenal.

They back up the reports from England regarding their interest and say the Gunners are the ‘front runners’ to secure the striker’s signature and will make a ‘strong bid’ to get him ahead of the competition.

Madrid are competitors but will only be so if they cannot get Erling Haaland, and both Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic leave the club. That would lead them to look for ‘alternatives’, and Jonathan David would be one of them. The priority, though, is Haaland.

Work is already underway to work out a way in which they can get him and Kylian Mbappe, potentially opening the door for Arsenal to get their man unhindered.
