Arsenal ‘cannot push’ to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this month as they are battling with ‘limitations’ on their finances.

That’s according to Belgium’s Het Nieuwsblad, who say despite talks having taken place between the two sides, the Gunners cannot push ahead at present.

The newspaper covers the January window today and how it has been a quiet one around the football world as clubs need to start complying with financial rules.

This has been particularly evident in the Premier League, where only €42m has been spent so far compared to €842m last season.

Clubs have had to ‘put the brakes on’ transfers so far and that has been the case for Arsenal, who are, like others, monitored by the Premier League in their newfound desire to prove their ability to govern themselves.

That is why Arsenal ‘cannot push’ for Onana. Talks with Everton ‘were/are ongoing’ and the player himself is considering a move but Arsenal have found themselves bound by ‘limitations’.

Their books are stretched, and it seems that a big name will have to leave first before they can target newcomers like Onana.

Who might depart isn’t mentioned.

Either way, a move for Onana can’t be pushed forward until it happens and so it seems for now, the Belgium international won’t be swapping Everton for the Emirates any time soon.
