Diego Costa has emerged as a transfer target for Arsenal, according to AS.
‘Arsenal, waiting for the future of Diego Costa’, reads a headline in the online edition of the Spanish newspaper.
Despite having Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners are looking for a new striker in January.
Regarding the Atlético Madrid player, it’s claimed the north London club have been ‘following the striker for a long time’.
The 32-year-old’s current deal runs down at the end of this season, and he is looking to leave the club in the winter market.
As per the report, Costa’s early departure will help Atlético to reduce their wage bill, but they also want to prevent him from joining a direct rival in January.
The player wants to continue in Europe and the Premier League side could offer a ‘favourable situation’. Diego Simeone’s side are in the Champions League, while Arsenal are in the Europa League. Therefore, the Emirates club will not be Atlético’s ‘direct rival’ this season.
While the frontman’s future is still to be resolved, Arteta’s side remain ‘very attentive’ to his situation at Wanda Metropolitano.
Arsenal are ‘waiting’ and could make an approach for him in January, if he’s available on a free transfer. AS also adds Costa will not be lacking options, more so if his contract at Atlético is terminated.
Costa knows the Premier League very well after having spent time in London with Chelsea. A move to Arsenal will see him return to the English capital.
