Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares is on his way to Arsenal, according to reports from Portugal.
Outlet Jornal de Notícias claims there’s an ‘agreement in principle’ between the clubs for the move, and the player should sign a five-year contract with the Gunners.
They say there are many clubs who are interested in the 21-year-old, including Napoli and Southampton, but Arsenal managed to ‘anticipate’ and are ‘very close’ on completing the move.
Jornal de Notícias writes the transfer’s formalisation is ‘imminent’.
Nuno Tavares’ departure from Benfica has been a constant topic in local newspapers for the past couple of months.
Club boss Jorge Jesus has no plans for him in the squad, with Alex Grimaldo being the first option for the left-back position, and the Eagles have been working on a sale for some time now.
Despite Napoli’s strong interest, it’s been recently reported that the Italian side couldn’t find an agreement for the move.
Southampton were then pointed out as an alternative, but now it seems it’s Arsenal who have jumped to the front of the queue and are landing him.
