Former AS Roma director Walter Sabatini remains proud over a couple of specific signings he made at the Italian club.

Interviewed by Telorama 65, the official was quizzed about the best business he conducted during his time at the Giallorossi, and talked about the purchase and sale of goalkeeper Alisson.

The player was signed from Brazilian side Internacional back in 2016, and only two years later he was bought by Liverpool.

“My best operation from a financial point of view was the one related to Alisson,” said Sabatini (via Area Napoli).

“I took him to the Giallorossi for only €7m, he had a year as a 12th player (back-up goalkeeper) and he was very angry with me. Then he took off as it should be and Liverpool took him.”

Liverpool spent €62.5m to take Alisson from Roma in 2018, signing the Brazilian as a replacement for Loris Karius, whose performance in that year’s Champions League final made it clear the Reds needed a new goalkeeper.

Now in nearly three years at Anfield Road, Alisson already has 112 appearances for the club, having won not only the Champions League but the Premier League as well.

Even though some headlines in the European media claimed he had a ‘Karius moment’ for Liverpool at the weekend, the Reds certainly won’t regret the investment made for his arrival.

Even if there are further slips in the coming weeks, it’s unlikely Alisson has to worry much about being the 12th man at Liverpool.
