In what is good news for Aston Villa and bad news for Ajax Amsterdam, Steven Bergwijn appears to be set to miss the Conference League clash between the two sides.

That’s according to Voetbal International, who explain the forward has ‘not recovered in time’ for the game, and will also be unable to take part in the next Eredivisie clash against Fortuna Sittard.

This will be a blow for the Dutch side, who will want as many of their key players as possible to face Aston Villa, especially since they have been far from their best all season, currently sitting fifth in the league.

Not only that, but Steven Berghuis is in a ‘race against time’ to be fit for the European fixture, as his manager, John van ’t Schip, revealed a knee issue is causing some problems.

While the winger is able to walk just fine, he is struggling to kick a ball, which is a problem when you are about to play against a Premier League side such as Aston Villa, with him being injected with painkillers ‘not the intention’ of the medical staff.

For Berghuis, if that pain subsides, he should be fine to play, but Van ’t Schip did make it clear Bergwijn would not be taking any part against Unai Emery’s side because of his hamstring issue

In fact, the former Tottenham player could also struggle to make it back in time for the return leg in Birmingham next week.
