At the end of last season, Tottenham Hotspur officials were seen scouting clubs in Italy a couple of times.
They first watched Inter Milan playing Sampdoria, and at that time, a local outlet pointed out two potential targets from the home side.
But then Spurs watched Sampdoria again, this time playing Chievo Verona, and that was a reason for us to point out that they could be keeping an eye on Samp.
In both matches, there was a common factor, which was a good performance from Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan youngster did well in the two games Tottenham watched, and that’s when he started getting attention from other Italian clubs.
Now he’s been linked to Inter Milan, and that’s why website FC Inter News interviewed the player’s agent Pablo Bentancur to speak about his situation at Sampdoria.
Torreira scored a goal in the 3-2 win over Juventus last weekend, and the representative is still pretty excited with that: “The idea is to continue until the end of the season with Sampdoria, it would be a shame to break such a beautiful toy. A team playing good football, the match against Juventus has shown it, ball on the ground without fear. Eleven compact players, all this is worthy of Mr. Giampaolo.”
Asked if there’s a release clause to take him from the club, Bentancur said: “We signed a new five-year contract a few months ago, inserting a €25m clause that is not in question. The most important thing now, however, is not this, the guy must be serene and give it all on the pitch. With Samp the relations are great.”
Now as we’ve made pretty clear, Tottenham have been never been linked to the player or made any contact for him. But they have watched the starlet, and given the competition which is starting to grow, that’s a target to be keeping an eye on.
