Calvin Bassey ‘had interest’ from Aston Villa and West Ham United this summer, before eventually leaving Rangers to join Ajax.
That’s according to his agent, who has revealed the Premier League duo were interested in the centre-back before his move to the Netherlands.
Bassey had been impressing at Rangers for two years following a free transfer from Leicester, establishing himself in the heart of their defence.
He was particularly impressive in Rangers’ run to the Europa League final last season, with a series of impressive performances along the way putting him in the spotlight.
There was naturally plenty of interest in him, with a move to the Premier League touted and several clubs thought to be keen on him.
He eventually ended up at Ajax, though, with the Dutch giants spending €20m to secure him as their replacement for Lisandro Martinez.
His agent has now discussed the summer interest and revealed that Aston Villa and West Ham were two of the sides who were keen.
“Arsenal contacted us and we let Rangers know, but they did not follow up,” Tuttomercatoweb report him saying to OwnGoalNigeria.
“We also had interest from Aston Villa and West Ham, but in the end, Ajax presented the best offer not in terms of money, but for his development as they promised regular employment.”
