Everton target Bas Dost had a big reason to celebrate this weekend. The striker, who hadn’t scored a goal since August, finally put an end to his drought by scoring a hat-trick against Chaves.
The Dutchman hadn’t been playing badly, with Sporting still fighting for the top of the table, but the lack of goals for the team’s main striker was obviously a worry.
All this attention convinced newspaper Record to call Dost’s agent Gunther Neuhaus, who talked a bit about the player’s form and also about his future at the club.
When quizzed if his client is looking for a move soon, the agent was quick to rule it out.
“To be clear about that, he only thinks about Sporting right now. He wants to succeed in the club,” Neuhaus told Record.
“He does not think of transferring to other clubs, or anything that looks like it. He feels very well in Lisbon and likes to live there.”
The answer has a lot to do with the Everton rumours. Started by the UK media, it was said the Toffees would try to sign the player in the January window as a request from Ronald Koeman.
But the rumour didn’t grow too strongly. First because the Portuguese press said the player would only leave for his €60m release clause, and even Dost himself ruled out a January transfer. And now that Koeman has been sacked, it looks even more unlikely.
So Everton may return next summer, but for now, not even the player’s agent is keen on teasing with a move out of Portugal.
