It’s been a while since we’ve had a real Simon Mignolet story (probably around a month), and that’s because the situation remains largely the same.
The Belgian goalkeeper, who was Alisson’s number two last season, made just two appearances in all competitions i.e. the cups, and the 31-year-old isn’t happy with how things are going at Anfield.
However, he finds himself in a tricky situation where his manager, Jürgen Klopp, likes having him around, and has made that clear by stating a club like the Reds need two number one goalkeepers in their squad.
That’s all well and good when there’s regular rotation, but there was little of that last year, as the Brazilian hogged the limelight, deservedly so might we say, leaving Mignolet on the bench for the vast, vast, vast majority of the campaign.
Despite this reluctance to see him leave, the Belgian’s entourage are working hard behind the scenes to get something sorted for the former Sunderland goalkeeper, as per his agent to DH.
He said: “The goalkeeper game of musical chairs hasn’t started yet. It’s important for Simon to play somewhere, and our goal is still to make him leave. He’s still got a lot to offer, and if we have an offer, we’re counting on Liverpool making an effort.”
Still contracted to the Champions League winners until 2021, Mignolet doesn’t appear to have a way out, and with very little quality beyond him and Alisson, Klopp might just dig his heels in all the way on this one.
