Rodrigo Bentancur emerged as a transfer target for Aston Villa in the winter market as Steven Gerrard is an admirer of the Juventus player.
After the Villans’ initial offer of €20m plus bonuses didn’t end up convincing the Serie A side, the Premier League club, on Saturday, were defining a new proposal to sign the midfielder.
This has been repeatedly reported in Italy despite Villa telling the English media they haven’t made an offer.
Aston Villa’s ‘new offer’ was worth €25m including bonuses and they had to convince both the Turin club and the 24-year-old.
Since then, Tottenham Hotspur have entered the scene to take the Uruguay international away from the Old Lady. Calciomercato now explain the player ‘would prefer’ the north London club over joining Gerrard’s side.
Villa’s chances to sign the South American before the window closes on Monday have now diminished as Gianluca Di Marzio states Massimiliano Allegri’s man ‘seems determined to decline Aston Villa’s offer’.
Over at Sky Italia, they give their take on the situation. It’s claimed Bentancur has ‘said no’ to Villa, but is open to making a switch to Spurs in the winter market.
With multiple sources stating Bentancur favours Tottenham over Villa, it is likely to end any hope Gerrard and his side have of signing the Juventus midfielder.
