Gazzetta dello Sport’s new format European Team of the Week simply lists the players chosen, moving into the top three in the middle.
The grand old Italian newspaper pick out a selection every week, whilst ignoring their own Serie A. There’s usually some English interest, with Tuesday’s selection having players from Burnley, Manchester City and Chelsea.
This week the highest rated Premier League performer is Olivier Giroud on 7.5/10 and whilst that doesn’t sound so high, it certainly is for Gazzetta who don’t hand out 7s like confetti.
Giroud was Chelsea’s star man as they came back from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 2-3 at the weekend. It was Giroud’s appearance from the substitute’s bench which changed everything for Chelsea, and whilst Antonio Conte only gave the Frenchman half an hour, it was still enough time for him to be Man of the Match.
Next up is Ilkay Gundogan, who helped Manchester City to a 3-1 victory over Tottenham. The German midfielder has put his injury woes behind him and has now scored in each of his past two Premier League matches.
Burnley’s Kevin Long rounds off the Premier League trio.
Long scored a goal and was Man of the Match for Burnley as they beat Leicester City 2-1 at the weekend.
Whilst Giroud and Gundogan have been in the selection before, we’re pretty sure it’s the first time Kevin Long has been in there.
