Marco van Ginkel is probably the kind of player making FIFA want to tear up the current loan system.
Signing for Chelsea in 2013, the midfielder has been sent out on loan to AC Milan, Stoke City and, now, PSV.
In fact, he’s been at PSV since 2016 and has this season been the club’s captain. At 25 years of age, Van Ginkel has led PSV to the Eredivisie title, but still has two years of contract with parent club Chelsea.
Dutch newspaper AD report on Tuesday that Van Ginkel’s future is up in the air. He’d been nervous about becoming captain this season, wondering if fans would accept the role being given to a loan player.
Supporters quickly got behind the player and AD say that during title celebrations at the weekend, Rotterdam’s Stadhuisplein was shouting in unison for Van Ginkel to stay.
Chelsea hold the power and the player’s contact, and it’s in their power to make the decision, something they’ll be expected to reveal soon.
