FC Porto wouldn’t mind Iker Casillas leaving in the January transfer window and taking his high wages with him, and the goalkeeper has been given that hint by being dropped.
José Sá isn’t necessarily a better goalkeeper and his performances haven’t been a huge jump from Casillas, but he’s cheaper and a potential reasonable sale for the future, whereas the former Real Madrid man was always likely to be short term.
The front page of Jornal de Noticias’ weekly sport section shouts out that Casillas could be off to Newcastle United. The Portuguese newspaper claims a source close to a potential transfer has revealed Newcastle are keen, as they look to hire a goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
Newcastle have been linked with a string of keepers, Kiko Casilla being one of them, perhaps an S has been added in confusion. It’s also claimed that Brighton & Hove Albion, and Burnley are also interested in a potential deal.
Brighton signed Tim Krul to add some experience and depth to their goalkeeping options, but question marks remain over the Dutchman’s fitness and level after a long term injury problem.
As for Burnley, Tom Heaton’s injury encouraged goalkeeper rumours, but signing Iker Casillas seems such an un-Burnley thing to do. Nick Pope has been doing well, and letting the 25 year old develop would be more like a Sean Dyche plan than signing 36 year old Iker Casillas.
An odd one, but someone has clearly told Jornal de Noticias that Newcastle United are interested, and Brighton and Burnley have been added along the way.
