Besiktas board member Ahmet Urkmezgil has confirmed Manchester City watched Cenk Tosun this week during the Turkish side’s Champions League clash with FC Porto.
Tosun has bene strongly linked with a move to the Premier League, with recent claims Newcastle United have opened talks to sign the forward.
Speaking to Fanatik, Urkmezgil said Manchester City travelled to Istanbul with the intention to watch the Turkey international: “I’m aware some of the clubs came to watch Tosun. I know Manchester City is one of them. There are other clubs but I don’t remember the names, I’m too busy with the celebrations!”
Despite Urkmezgil’s claims Manchester City are interested in the 26 year old, a move to the Etihad could be questioned. Signing a centre forward isn’t a priority for Pep Guardiola, who already has Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus in his squad, and the Besiktas official may be trying to push up Tosun’s value by linking him Manchester City due to their financial might.
However, a move to Newcastle United looks more likely at the moment after the Premier League side recently opened talks with the player’s agent.
Newcastle United have been linked with Tosun since the last window when they tried to sign him, and there have been reports in Turkey they are preparing a January bid.
