If the name Dimitri Oberlin rings a bell, it’s probably because there’s been a number of articles published over the past few months on his decision to reject Manchester United.
Opting to join Red Bull Salzburg instead, where he has since been loaned to Basel for the current season, the Swiss striker showed great maturity in wanting to develop more before joining one of the largest clubs in the world.
On the flip side, the decision could be seen as ludicrous, as the chance to move to Old Trafford doesn’t come every day, but TuttoMercatoWeb on Tuesday claim the opportunity could present itself again in the future.
The Italian website state both Manchester United and Arsenal have been tracking the 20-year-old’s performances week after week by sending scouts to his Basel games, and have been joined by some tough competition, such as Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
TuttoMercatoWeb also claim Oberlin has a €5m release clause in his contract, which most of the clubs following him will consider pocket change these days.
While Red Bull Salzburg would have to accept bids matching that amount, the decision would ultimately be the youngster’s.
With Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford already at Old Trafford, and Oberlin’s ability to either play down the left or through the middle, perhaps a move to Manchester United will have to wait a while longer.
