Before the late acquisition of Davide Zappacosta from Torino, Chelsea’s main plan for the summer transfer window was a wing-back to backup Victor Moses.
Names were thrown around, mostly from Italy, including Atalanta’s Andrea Conti, who eventually ended up at AC Milan.
Multiples stories were written on the matter, yet there was never any confirmation of the interest, until now, as the player himself admitted to it in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport
Asked about the rumours sending him to Inter, Napoli and Antonio Conte’s side before his move to the other Milan side, he said: “My agent told me something about Napoli, there was something, but the real alternative was Inter.
“Milan’s interest was way bigger, and I decided: I liked the idea of a new cycle.”
Of course, AC Milan’s project of buying half of Europe hasn’t exactly worked out, with the side currently sitting in seventh in the league, 13 points behind leaders Napoli.
As for Andrea Conti, despite starting the first few games, the 23-year-old is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring his cruciate ligament and isn’t expected to return before mid-March.
