When Portuguese outlet Record reported that Fulham were signing Rui Fonte from Braga yesterday, there weren’t many details out. They only said it would be a €9m deal, and the money would be split between Braga and Fonte’s former club Benfica.
Now all the Portuguese newspapers seem to know about the transfer, and it turns out that it’s quite interesting how the London side were insisting on landing the player this summer.
As reported by A Bola, Fulham first tried with a €4m bid in June, then a €7m offer two weeks ago, and only now have they been able to convince Braga to sell the player.
The amount of the transfer will be €9.125m, and there’s a couple of bonuses included: one for goals scored and another for Fulham achieving Premier League promotion. They can make the total figure reach up to €11m.
The player is expected to earn €1m per year at Fulham, which is a significant pay rise from what he used to make at Braga.
Fonte had to be excluded from the squad which travelled to Finland for the Europa League playoffs, and he’s in a hurry to have his medical at Fulham still today.
Newspaper O Jogo reports that the Championship side’s idea is to play him against Sheffield Wednesday.
