Since returning from his loan at Besiktas, Vincent Aboubakar was linked to numerous possible destinations. As always, the pretenders getting most attention came from the Premier League, with Newcastle United and Swansea City said to be interested.
The player even spoke to the Turkish press saying he would not miss the opportunity to join Swansea City, which also sounded good for Newcastle, so his departure from Porto seemed like something quite possible.
But things have changed a lot since the start of preseason. This week, Aboubakar kissed the Porto badge after scoring a goal, and O Jogo now reports he’s negotiating a new contract at the club.
Since his current deal expires next year, it will be extended and he’ll also get a pay raise, due to the importance he’ll have in the squad after the departure of Andre Silva to AC Milan.
So either Newcastle and Swansea showed interest and never moved for him, or it was all a big play for the player to get a new contract at FC Porto. That would not be something new for the Premier League, would it?
