Arsenal fans might remember Diogo Gonçalves, the Benfica wonderkid who has been described as ‘Arsene Wenger’s passion’ a while ago.
The Gunners’ interest in him is something so public in Portugal that the player was quizzed twice about it last season, and although he was said to have ‘rejected’ the club, he was always very respectful when commenting on it.
Anyway, it seems Diogo Gonçalves is really heading to England this summer, but not to Arsenal. According to today’s edition of Record, his destination should be Wolves.
Championship side Wolves, now managed by Portuguese coach Nuno Espírito Santo, would be ‘waiting’ for the 20-year-old to be part of their squad for next season.
Wolves would be signing Gonçalves on a loan deal, with Benfica not willing to let him go permanently.
Gonçalves is treated as a real talent at Benfica, and only isn’t getting a spot in the first team because the squad is already full of wingers.
As he’s a Jorge Mendes client, it would be no surprise to see him joining Wolves. But things are not done yet and the transfer is only described as likely to happen.
