Ron-Robert Zieler is apparently fed up with being understudy to Kasper Schmeichel, and could be looking for a return to Germany.

Bild report that VfB have the Leicester City goalkeeper as an option to sign this summer, and the German newspaper also claim wider interest from the Bundesliga. Hamburg, Werder Bremen and Hertha Berlin are said to be keen on the goalkeeper, but that doesn’t mean he could look forward to a financially attractive move.

Zieler would have to take a ‘big financial drop’ to facilitate a return to German football, at least with any of the clubs mentioned. On high wages at Leicester, it’s almost certain Bundesliga clubs wouldn’t match the amount.

Schmeichel has himself been much linked with a Leicester exit in recent months, with the Danish media excitedly pushing stories. It got so silly at one point that rumours of Real Madrid interest were taken seriously.

If Schmeichel does leave Leicester City, then surely Zieler would expect a shot at being first choice.
