Lyon are targeting a late move for Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg as they eye additions at the end of the window to help their relegation battle.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say the French side are looking at the Tottenham man despite the arrival of Nemanja Matic to bolster their midfield.
They explain that despite Matic adding considerable experience to the team, he does not speak French and so will have difficulty getting the message across.
Thus, the club are looking for reinforcements who can do this and one who ‘could well tick all the boxes’ is Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg.
He speaks French, is experienced at the highest level and is seen as the type of ‘tireless’ and ‘aggressive’ profile that the side needs.
Those two things, specifically the fact he speaks French courtesy of his mother, makes him very attractive and when he had once been untouchable, he is now seen as gettable given his situation at Tottenham.
The French side would still have to get their cheque book out and the ‘battle promises to be tough’ but the idea is there, and Lyon are exploring it.
They feel they can convince Höjbjerg as they can offer regular playing time ahead of Euro 2024. He needs that to ensure he is fit and firing for Denmark at the tournament in Germany.
Whether they can convince Tottenham to sell is another matter, but the hunt is on as they look to add a player to lift the mood at the club, who sit 16th in the table and very much in need of a morale boost.
